Two weeks ago I had a 10 mile run scheduled for my Half Marathon training. I started that run out really good. It didn't take me my normal 1/2 mile to get into a groove. I was even at a faster than normal pace in the first mile.
At mile 4 I ate one of the two gu's I had brought along. Within 1/2 mile I was able to get back into the groove of things again. Halfway through the run I was feeling quite good about the run and all my accomplishments as a runner.
At mile 8, my left thigh was hurting and I was running low on energy again. I didn't think I was going to make it. I told myself that it was only 2 more miles and to just push through it. Within 1/2 mile I had to slow down and walk. I kept trying to run again, but my thigh just kept hurting. So I walked the rest of the way home. I felt so defeated.
I tried to tell myself that it was ok because I didn't want to continue on a hurt leg and completely hurt it where I wouldn't be able to run my half at all next month. I tried to figure out things that I could have done better in order to be able to run the full 10 miles next time around. I tried not to be too hard on myself. I tried not to let myself off the hook for not finish my full 10 miles running, though. All I could do was move forward and learn what I could from the experience.
Today I set out for that 10 mile run again. I made sure to drink plenty of water yesterday and to have a carb filled dinner (pasta!) I made sure to take 2 gu's along with me. One for about mile 4 and one for about mile 8! It doesn't matter if there are only 2 miles left, eat that gu at mile 8 when your energy starts to run low again!!
I made sure to start pacing myself early. I didn't want to run too fast at the beginning again and burn out. It was cold out so I started with a jacket on. I was feeling great about this run right from the beginning.
At mile 3, I stopped for a drink and took my jacket off. I was getting too hot in that jacket! At mile 4, I ate the first gu and it helped give me a boost in energy. Miles 5-7 went smoothly. Then I felt a dip in my energy level again. At mile 8, I ate the second gu and it did the trick. Those next 2 miles felt so easy to finish. I finished that 10 mile run and it felt great! I was able to conquer those 10 miles this time around! I overcame that feeling of defeat I had last time.
This song was playing at the end of my run and it seemed very fitting!

No matter what has you down right now, remember that you are an Overcomer! This song fits so manner situations I have been through in my life and have overcome. Never give up because you never know what God has waiting for you next.
